The Twelve Houses
Self, money, home, work, partnership, career: the twelve houses divide a chart into twelve areas of life. Where the signs describe character, the houses describe the ground where that character actually lands.
How the houses work
The twelve houses are twelve areas of life, not personality traits. The first governs the self and the body, the second money and values, the fourth home and family, the sixth work and health, the seventh partnership, the tenth career and public role. Where a sign says what you are like, a house says which part of life it shows up in.
The houses fall into three groups by tempo. The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are where life acts and initiatives begin. The succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are where things consolidate and hold. The cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are where life adapts, learns and prepares. The wheel always starts at the Ascendant, the edge of the first house, and runs from there.
Reading the houses needs a birth time, since the whole wheel is set by the exact moment and place of birth. Once it is in place, any planet takes on the meaning of the house it falls in: Venus in the tenth house colours the career, the same Venus in the fourth turns toward home.
