What is a moon sign?
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Where your Sun sign describes the self you are building in public, your moon sign describes the one who comes home at night: how you feel before you have words for it, what you reach for when you are tired or scared, what has to be true for you to actually rest. Astrologers tend to read it as the seat of instinct and emotional memory, which is why two people with the same Sun sign can be soothed by completely different things. Computing it is straightforward: the Moon's position in the sky for your birth date is a matter of astronomy, so we look it up from ephemeris data and tell you the sign and degree.
Why we don't ask for your city
Because it would change nothing. At any given moment, the Moon sits at one spot in the zodiac, and that spot is the same whether you were born in Lisbon or Lima. Your city matters for the ascendant, which depends on the local horizon, but not for the Moon. Calculators that ask for a place usually need it only to work out which clock your birth hour belongs to; we name the clock we use right next to the time field instead. The hour itself only matters on days the Moon changed signs.

The Moon spends about two and a third days in each sign, which means it crosses into a new one roughly every other day. So this is common: on about half of all birth dates, the Moon was in one sign in the morning and another by night. When that is true for your date, we do not guess. Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?
Usually, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a third days, so on roughly half of all birth dates the date alone gives a definite answer. On the other half, when the Moon changed signs during your day, we show you both possibilities honestly and let the hour, or your own recognition, decide.
Why do other calculators ask for my birth place?
Mostly to convert your birth time into universal time, since time zones differ. The Moon's position in the zodiac is the same from every point on Earth, so the place itself adds nothing to a moon sign. It genuinely matters for the ascendant and the houses, which depend on your local horizon, but not here.
What if the Moon changed signs on my birthday?
Then you have two candidates, and this tool names both. People often call this being born on the cusp, but the Moon is never in two signs at once: you are one or the other, not a blend. Your exact birth hour almost always settles it. If you do not have the hour, read both portraits and notice which one describes your actual reflexes.
Is my moon sign different from my regular zodiac sign?
Often, yes. Your regular zodiac sign is your Sun sign, where the Sun stood on your birthday. The Moon moves much faster and usually sits somewhere else entirely, which is why you can be a Capricorn who cries at films or a Gemini who needs a quiet evening at home. The two describe different layers of you.
What does the degree mean (e.g. 14°)?
Each sign spans thirty degrees, so the degree tells you how far the Moon had traveled through the sign at your birth. Around 14° it sits solidly mid-sign; at 0° or 29° it has just arrived or is about to leave. Astrologers use degrees to time aspects precisely, but for reading your portrait, the sign is what counts.
How often does the Moon change signs?
Roughly every two and a third days: the Moon circles the whole zodiac in about 27 days, spending a little over two days in each sign. That speed is why it carries your day-to-day moods in astrology, and why a birth time can matter here when it never would for your slower-moving Sun sign.
