What is my Midheaven?
The Midheaven, or MC, is the point directly overhead in your chart: the direction of your public face and your work in the world. It needs your exact birth time.
What the Midheaven describes
The Midheaven is where the ecliptic, the Sun's yearly path, crosses the meridian above your birth place. It is not a planet and not a body: it is a direction, the top of the chart. Astrology reads it as the part of you that faces outward and upward, which usually gets summarised as career and often gets misread as job title. What it actually describes is closer to reputation and vocation: what people expect of you once they know your name, and what you would keep doing if nobody were paying. Opposite it sits the IC, the bottom of the chart, which covers home, roots and the private ground you stand on. Those two are one axis, so the Midheaven is never only about ambition.
How precise your birth time has to be
Four minutes of birth time is roughly one degree of Midheaven. A quarter of an hour is about four degrees. If your birth time was rounded to the nearest hour, and many are, your Midheaven could be fifteen degrees out, which is half a sign, and near a sign boundary that changes the answer entirely. We show your degree so you can judge the margin yourself: at 12 degrees of a sign a rounded hour is survivable, at 28 degrees it is not. One more convention worth naming: in Placidus, Koch and Regiomontanus the Midheaven is also the cusp of the tenth house, but in whole sign houses it is not, and it can land in the ninth, tenth or eleventh. The Midheaven itself is the same point in all of them. What changes is which house it heads.
If you do not know your birth time
Then you do not have a Midheaven yet, and no calculator can honestly invent one. Birth certificates in many countries record the time; the long form, rather than the short one, is usually where it lives. Hospital records and baby books are the other two places people find it. While you look, the placements that do not depend on the hour still work: your Sun sign, your Venus, your Mars and, on most days, your Moon.

In most quadrant house systems, including Placidus, Koch and Regiomontanus, yes. In whole sign houses, no: there the tenth house begins at a sign boundary and the Midheaven can fall in the ninth, tenth or eleventh. We compute the Midheaven itself, which is identical across all of them. Only the house it lands in depends on the system.
Why do I need my exact birth time?
Because the Midheaven is fixed to the rotating sky rather than to the date. The Earth turns once a day, so the Midheaven crosses all twelve signs in 24 hours, one degree every four minutes. A birth date on its own narrows it down to nothing at all.
How wrong can a rounded birth time make it?
Fifteen minutes moves the Midheaven about four degrees. A full hour moves it fifteen. If the time you have was rounded, treat the sign as probable rather than certain, especially when the degree we give you is close to 0 or 29. That is exactly why we print the degree instead of just the sign.
Does my Midheaven decide my career?
No. It describes a direction of visibility, not a job. Two people with the same Midheaven sign can end up in unrelated work and both recognise themselves in it, because what they share is how they want to be seen, not what pays them.
