What a Venus sign describes
Venus is the part of a chart that deals with attraction and value, which turn out to be the same appetite pointed at different things. It covers taste, affection, money and the style of your closeness, not the fact of it. A chart cannot tell you whether you are loved. What the Venus sign describes is the shape of the reaching: whether you court slowly or all at once, whether you show affection by staying or by giving, what you find beautiful before you have decided to. People often recognise their Venus sign faster than their Sun sign, because it is the one that shows up in the small choices they never had to think about.
Venus is never far from your Sun
This is astronomy rather than interpretation: seen from Earth, Venus never appears more than about 47 degrees away from the Sun. That is why it only ever shows up as a morning or evening star, and why your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. If a calculator hands you a Venus five signs from your Sun, something has gone wrong in it. Two more things worth knowing: Venus spends about 40 days retrograde every 18 months, which is roughly one birth in fifteen, and on the day it changes sign there is no single right answer without a birth time, which is why this page shows two.

What is a Venus sign?
It is the zodiac sign Venus occupied at the moment you were born. Astrology reads it as the style of your affection and your taste: how you approach people you want, what you find beautiful, and what you treat as valuable. It is a different question from your Sun sign, which is about identity rather than appetite.
Do I need my birth time?
Not for the sign. Venus spends three to five weeks in each sign, so your date pins it down on all but one day in roughly twenty five. If your birth date happens to be a changeover day, this page tells you and shows both candidates rather than picking one. You would need your birth time for the house Venus sits in, which is a separate question.
Why does another calculator give me a different Venus sign?
Almost always because you were born on a day Venus changed sign, and the other calculator quietly assumed an hour, usually noon or midnight in some timezone. On those days the honest answer is two answers. The other possibility is a sidereal calculator: Vedic astrology uses a zodiac offset by about 24 degrees, so most placements shift back one sign. We use the tropical zodiac, which is what Western astrology means by a sign.
Can Venus be retrograde in my chart?
Yes, for about 40 days in every 18 month cycle, so a little under 7 percent of people have it. Retrograde is an appearance, not a reversal: Venus does not actually change direction, it only looks that way from a moving Earth. Astrologers usually read a retrograde Venus as an inward, reconsidering version of the same appetite, often with a slower or less conventional route into closeness.
Does my Venus sign say who I will end up with?
No, and any calculator that says it does is selling something. A placement describes a tendency, not an outcome. What the Venus sign can usefully do is name a pattern you might already be aware of, so you can decide whether it is serving you.
