The Three Modalities
Cardinal, fixed and mutable: the modalities describe how a sign moves through life, whether it starts things, steadies them, or adapts. Paired with the elements, they are half of what makes each sign its own.
How the three modalities work
Where the elements describe what a sign is made of, the modalities describe how it moves. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things; they open the seasons and push for action. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold and deepen what has begun. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt, blend and prepare the way for change.
Each modality contains one sign of every element, so it cuts across temperament: cardinal fire (Aries) initiates very differently from cardinal water (Cancer). The modality gives you the rhythm; the element gives you the material.
